This course of lectures by Bill Mance (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, LMS Distinguished Visiting Fellow at ICMU) will introduce an active research area with many accessible but challenging problems to solve.

The goals of this series of lectures are to:

  • Introduce new mathematical concepts to enthusiastic younger mathematicians that are both accessable and challenging.

  • Suggest new research directions and possible international collaborations. An important theme will be that while these problems are presented in the context of normality, there are likely to be similar interesting questions that the speaker may not have thought of in other areas of mathematics. Thus, mathematicians of all backgrounds are encouraged to attend these talks.

The Ukrainian host is Roman Nikiforov, a professor at the Drahomanov National Pedagogical University.

After visiting ICMU in Kyiv, Professor Mance will also visit Lviv and give a colloquium lecture there. It will take place on 29 May at 16:40 at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (LNU). ICMU is grateful to professor Taras Banakh for organizing this event.

Bill Mance earned his PhD at the Ohio State University in 2010. Since 2018, he has been a professor at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Professor Mance’s research interests include ergodic theory, probability theory, computability theory, descriptive set theory, and its applications in number theory and other areas of mathematics. Bill Mance is well known for his lecturing skills and has served as a scientific mentor to many students and high schoolers.
